2008 FALL COLORS EXPECTED TO BE BRILLIANT

Reports indicate that recent climate conditions are working in favor of an outstanding leaf season in Western North Carolina.

“The environmental conditions leading into autumn are the best we’ve seen in years here in Western North Carolina, possibly setting the stage for the brightest leaf color show in recent history,” said Dr. Gary Walker, a biology professor at Appalachian State University. Our area boasts one of the longest fall color seasons, from late September through early November, due to the varying elevations and microclimates. One of the best places to view early fall foliage is the Blue Ridge Parkway, while Asheville and the town of Black Mountain will likely see peak fall colors sometime in the middle of the season. Late leaf turning in the gorgeous Hickory Nut Gorge can be enjoyed at Chimney Rock, just a half hour south of us.

Here at the Inn, we'll be spending the remainder of 2008 watching the leaves turn and planning our 2009 projects. For example, as a site on the North Carolina Birding Trail and as fortunate residents within the Pisgah National Forest, we'll be identifying the best places on the property for nature walks. Brigette has already put in her fall planting order with her favorite nurseries and is busy planning a new garden. Dave is busy fine tuning the big screen HD projection TV in the Great Room for college football and cold-weather movie nights. The innpugs, Csaba and Bugsy, are busy taking plenty of naps.

As of the publication of this newsletter in September, we still have a few openings left for October weekends, and the Inn will be open for the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Before you know it, guests will be sitting by a warm fire in the Great Room and taking hikes in the crisp mountain air. Then, Spring will be just around the corner and everyone will be counting down the days until the first crocus blooms.

And guess what -- In 2009, the Inn turns 10! We'll be celebrating the Inn on Mill Creek's 10th anniversary all year long with lots of "10s", starting with a 10% discount on all stays of three days or more in 2009.

Don't forget to check the innblog from time to time to catch up with happenings at the Inn. We hope you can join us sometime soon in our neck of the woods!

MORE ABOUT THE BIRDING TRAIL

As mentioned above, the Inn on Mill Creek is listed as a site on the North Carolina Birding Trail. The NC Birding Trail links over 300 bird watching sites all over the state. Three regional components -- Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Mountains -- offer great opportunities for bird watching in different climates and geographical areas.

Trail Guides are already available for the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions. We've had the chance to see the guides and they're great resources for anyone interested in birding in North Carolina.

The Inn on Mill Creek will be included in the Mountain guide, which will be available in 2009.

INN ON MILL CREEK COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

One of the ways we connect with our local and worldwide community is through contributions to special organizations. This year, along with our strong support of Handmade in America, a non-profit organization working with the town of Old Fort to promote economic development in western North Carolina, we're proud to support the Old Fort community by contributing toward the construction of Davidson's Fort

Each log Brigette is standing near has been shaped by hand

Davidson's Fort is a Revolutionary War-era fort being rebuilt for educational, recreational and historical benefit. The fort (for which the town of Old Fort gets its name) will display a piece of cultural heritage unique to the area and we're excited to see it going up! We say "Great work!" to the volunteers who are putting in so much effort to build the fort.

Additionally, we're proud to be counted again as a sponsor of Taste of Black Mountain, coming up on September 11, 2008. Taste of Black Mountain is a terrific (and tasty!) event where local restaurants and beer/wine distributors offer samples to the public. We love our local restaurants and we can't wait to see what they have in store for Taste of Black Mountain. Contact the Black Mountain/Swannanoa Chamber of Commerce at 828.669.2300 for details.

This year, we've also continued making microloans to business owners in the developing world through the non-profit organization called Kiva. What a great way for ordinary people like us to help in the fight against global poverty. It has been inspiring to read about our group of entrepreneurs, real people like Nilton who owns a farming co-op in Peru, Kolani Biakamangue who has a general store in Togo, and Ngo Thi Tinh who sells clothing in Vietnam. We wish much success to them and look forward to helping out more business owners in 2009. You can learn more about Kiva at their website: www.kiva.org.
