2009 LEAF SEASON GOES OUT WITH A BLAST OF COLOR

As we write to you this early November weekend, we're watching the last of the Autumn colors on the ridges around the Inn on Mill Creek drift down leaf by leaf, covering the forest floor in crisp copper tones. Some trees wowed us this year: hickories and beech trees created walls of gold, sourwoods showed off their reds and the maples gave us brilliant color for weeks. Other trees were not as colorful as last year: we remember our tulip poplars being a shimmering sunny yellow; this year the leaves were tinged in brown. Overall, Mother Nature did a wonderful job despite giving us some rainy October days, and we now wait patiently for the vibrant green of Spring to complement the evergreen rhododendron and mountain laurel that blanket our ridges.

In the meantime, Fall is well underway in the mountains and we're moving full speed ahead into the holiday season. Keep in mind, the Inn will be open during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Dave will be whipping up his hearty breakfasts as always and Brigette has perfected her herbed buttery popcorn just in time for winter movie nights on the 5x9-foot Great Room projection TV.

One of our projects for late-2009/early-2010 is to tweak the website. Stay tuned as we add sections for birding, hiking, and guest photo contributions. We've seen some of the photos taken by our guests during their visits -- you all are so talented! If you have any photos you'd like us to share, please send them to info@innonmillcreek.com.

We hope you'll visit the innblog from time to time to read the latest news from in and around the Inn on Mill Creek. If you're part of the Twitterverse, you can catch us on Twitter as well (we post lots of pictures there). And our Facebook page is not far behind. However, as much as we love the social networking opportunities available to Bed & Breakfast inns these days, nothing beats seeing our guests smile. We hope to see you in person sometime in our neck of the woods!

QUIET SEASON DISCOUNT ON 2-NIGHT STAYS

Enjoy the peacefulness of Pisgah National Forest and the quiet season in our neck of the woods: From January through March of 2010, we'll be offering a 10% discount on stays of two or more nights, perfect for a Winter or early Spring weekend getaway to the mountains.

Five of our seven rooms have fireplaces for keeping guests warm and cozy, and a soak in one of the Lake House guest room double Jacuzzi tubs is a real treat after a hectic holiday season or a cool weather hike -- like the one to the view above, which is along the ridge above our orchard, photographed late last December. As Csaba, our innpug and hibernation expert can attest, the Inn on Mill Creek is a relaxing place all around.

INN ON MILL CREEK COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

One of the ways we connect with our local and worldwide community is through contributions to special organizations. A few of our commitments to community service in 2009:

We became members of the Old Fort Mountain Heritage Alliance, a group whose mission is to recognize, revitalize and promote the historic, cultural, social and economic significance of Old Fort and to educate the community about the benefits of its preservation through active community volunteerism. The OFMHA is working closely with another group that we support, Handmade in America, as a participant in Handmade's Small Towns Program. A few projects that have been completed or are in the works include placing beautiful planters along the main streets of Old Fort, creating new signage for the town's entry points, developing a multi-purpose "creekwalk" along Mill Creek and working toward making Old Fort's downtown a historic district on the National Register. We're excited to be actively involved with this fine group of individuals who are committed to preserving a charming small town and helping it to reach its potential.

Also in our local community, the McDowell County Fraternal Order of Police is continuing their tradition of coordinating the delivery of food baskets to families and elderly residents in need during the holiday season. We're thankful that the McDowell FOP provides this opportunity to those of us in the local community who wish to directly help out our neighbors by making a food basket donation.

We were extremely proud to be part of a special event this past February hosted by the Enrichment Center, a non-profit organization based in Winston-Salem, NC, that works to develop artistic talent and careers in the arts for adults with physical and developmental disabilities. The Enrichment Center's second annual Mardi Gras on Marshall event featured New Orleans cuisine, a parade, and live music and dance performances by Enrichment Center students, as well as live and silent auctions benefiting the Enrichment Center's Endowment Fund. Donating a Bed & Breakfast package was our way of helping out this great group.

Finally, helping in the fight against poverty is one way we stay connected to the global community. One of the ways we celebrated the Inn on Mill Creek's 10th birthday this year was to set a goal to help 10 entrepreneurs in the developing world by microloaning through a non-profit organization called Kiva. So far, we've helped to fund eight small business owners in 2009, including our latest: a 22-year-old man named Babken Hovhannisyan who runs a bakery with his father in Armenia. Additionally, Brigette applied for, and was accepted into a spot on the Kiva Editing Team, who makes sure loans translated into English from a business owner's native language are grammatically correct and understandable. This helps her put that journalism degree to good use and to further help a cause that's important to us. You can learn more about Kiva at their website: www.kiva.org.
