Summer 2007

Spring 2007

Winter 2007

I remember a hundred lovely lakes, and recall the fragrant breath of pine and fir and cedar and poplar trees.  The trail has strung upon it, as upon a thread of silk, opalescent dawns and saffron sunsets.  It has given me blessed release from care and worry and the troubled thinking of our modern day.  It has been a return to the primitive and the peaceful.  Whenever the pressure of our complex city life thins my blood and benumbs my brain, I seek relief in the trail...my cares fall from me - I am happy.

We have a beautiful, fragrant red rose bush that has really come to life the past few weeks.

We think it's competing with the rose sitting next to it (not pictured), which came from the Biltmore Estate. They are both now over four feet tall. Tonight, the roses seemed to reach up toward the twilight moon.

Coincidence? A little praying mantis arrived shortly after we bought our dancing (says Brigette) / boxing (says Dave) praying mantises from Black Mountain Iron Works. Brigette noticed him when she was out cleaning up the rose bushes. We've circled the real guy in the first photo; he's to the left of the bottom far right rose in the second photo.

It's almost blackberry and grape "pick 'em and eat 'em" time...we have lots of grapes growing along the orchard fence, and blackberries are growing at the south end of the property (where the blueberries should also be, but, alas, the late April frost put an end to them for the year). Here are the early birds, or should we say, early fruits. Expect to taste some of these delicious delights in our fresh-squeezed juice at breakfast:

We had some considerable rain, the most we've gotten all summer long. In fact, we went through a five-week stretch of no rain and started wondering when the rain would ever come. Well, the clouds burst wide open and gave us a fantastic downpour this week. The water was gushing over the dam and our creek became a river. The sound of a waterfall makes for a wonderful breakfast interlude.

Check out who decided to dip his toes in the lake this afternoon. This is the first we've seen of this fellow...hope he comes back to visit.

Here's a photo of part of the garden...almost a red, white & blue theme with the mums, catmint and phlox. Next year, we will definitely be planting more white and blue. The colors cool off our sun garden beautifully.

The oriental lilies are starting to bloom...very fragrant!  The second shot shows their location with our orchard across the road in the background.

This morning after breakfast, a tiny guest ventured into the dining solarium.

We assisted the little guy (gal?) back outside, but then our new feathered friend decided to hang around near  the door for a while, even glancing up when we started chatting with it to convince it to fly away...

...finally, after a minute or two, it took a few short  hopping steps down the deck and flew quietly back into the forest.
