Fall 2007

Summer 2007

Spring 2007

Winter 2007

I remember a hundred lovely lakes, and recall the fragrant breath of pine and fir and cedar and poplar trees.  The trail has strung upon it, as upon a thread of silk, opalescent dawns and saffron sunsets.  It has given me blessed release from care and worry and the troubled thinking of our modern day.  It has been a return to the primitive and the peaceful.  Whenever the pressure of our complex city life thins my blood and benumbs my brain, I seek relief in the trail...my cares fall from me - I am happy.

Our prickly pear cactus is bearing fruit...we've read that you can make prickly pear jelly, but getting the darn things off the cactus might be a little tricky (suggestions include leather gloves and bacon tongs). It might be a little too much effort for us to try this year, but maybe next year.

Happy Halloween! A rather large garden spider has made his home between two of our rose bushes. He's not catching much, but he's certainly trying. Last week, we had some rainy days and our resident spider's web caught some of the raindrops, giving it a nice shimmer in the morning. Not quite a spooky web but a good precursor to Halloween nonetheless.

Dave headed down to the Old Fort Picnic Area (just a few minutes from the Inn) on his way to Old Fort, and took these photos. We're really enjoying the long leaf season.

Be sure to check the innblog for fall foliage reports!

From the top of the orchard, you can see Green Knob, one of the peaks on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This section of the Parkway is approximately 4 miles as the crow flies, but takes quite a bit longer to get to by driving. Looks like the Parkway is heading towards its fall foliage peak time...

What a pretty sight as the leaves start to turn:  Goldenrod in large drifts (along the lake near the blueberry and blackberry bushes at the southern end of the property).
