Time to file our final fall color report for 2020! Hurricane Zeta brought some decent wind gusts that took down most of the fully changed leaves in our neighborhood of Pisgah National Forest late last week, but color remains at a few places nearby.
It’s our final week of fall color reports for 2019 and there are still plenty of oranges and reds in the landscape here around Asheville as we head into the late fall season, thanks to Mother Nature delaying the start of the color show this year. And some areas just south of us are at peak now, so even going further into November, leaves will be changing depending on where you go.
With more than a week to go before the official start of winter, Mother Nature decided a snow day was in order for the Western North Carolina mountains. More than 15 inches was recorded right here at the Inn on Mill Creek between December 9 and 10, 2018. Get ready for some pretty pictures of our winter wonderland!
We’ve got a secret hidden gem of a place to share with you: the nature trail at the Old Fort Picnic Area. If you’re reading this, shhh. Don’t tell anyone. Just kidding. But not about the nature trail and the picnic grounds being a gem.
The greenway closest to the Inn on Mill Creek, Point Lookout Trail, is getting some much-needed repairs soon! This means that the trail will be closed during the summer of 2016, but the work being done will provide long-term benefits, which is great news because this is a favorite trail for our guests.
We were very fortunate to see the Norfolk & Western 611 steam locomotive pulling 21 cars as it passed by the Inn on Mill Creek B&B (twice) on April 10, 2016, taking passengers on a special one-day excursion from Spencer, NC, to Asheville and back again.
Looking to get outdoors during your springtime visit to the Asheville area? A waterfall hike can be a great experience for many reasons: a chance to see spring wildflowers and other vibrant spring green everywhere, fewer crowds on the trails than in the summer and fall, and also the snow melt from higher elevations and the occasional spring rain shower make for more water…falling. One waterfall we like happens to be the closest one to the Inn on Mill Creek: Catawba Falls.

Sure, October is the month where Mother Nature transforms the mountains of Western North Carolina into a brilliant work of art with her color palette of golds, reds and oranges, but it’s also when the colorful work of our local artisans is celebrated, during American Craft Week.
The Pioneer Day festival in our town of Old Fort, NC, celebrates the spirit and ingenuity of American pioneers who lived in the mountains prior to and after the Revolutionary War, when our nation was just getting going.
